Artist of the Week – Kaan Bagci

Posted on February 4, 2013 · Posted in Artist of the Week

Six Points by Kaan Bağcı – mixed media www.dijibutik.com

It’s very difficult to ‘label’ the work of Kaan Bagci. He fuses graphics and illustration with Fine Art conceptual elements. Many of his works consist of beautifully designed, drawn, formed and conceptualised images. His drawings and collages of animals, such as geese, fish, insects, are drawn in a clinical and detailed manner. Each image has an anatomically scientific and academic textbook feel; a feel where they could almost have been drawn and created a hundred years ago. However, each piece has a contemporary edgy and almost futuristic quirky twist.

Bagci is interested in music and has been a part of school choirs and variety of music ensembles. He also took part as an instrumentalist and actor in Netherlands, Italy, India and other countries.

Bagci started his artistic career as a professional web designer at Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and continues to work as a visual arts and animation instructor. Over the years throughout his commissions and employment Bagci has continued to maintain and develop his varied and personal portfolio.

Four Points by Kaan Bağcı – mixed media www.dijibutik.com

Your images use mixed-media, fusing photographic collage with beautiful detailed drawings, Fine Art materials and techniques. Pulling from so many resources, how you select what to use and what to disregard from your experiences?
Actually I don’t know how can I explain :) so I will try..

My creating period is not static or not systematic. Maybe it’s good for me, or not.. I don’t know :)), but I love this style it keeps some secrets and surprises for me :).

Inspiration – sketches or surfing on internet (billion of images) – catch the true material

And Ready! Set! Go! :)

Working with so many personalities who commission your work from different genres, for different ages, all having different visions, what are the most challenging aspects of working as an illustrator or graphic designer?
All the works are so difficult if it’s being made for money!

Nano Structure by Kaan Bağcı www.dijibutik.com

Your recent work is visually complex and conceptual which challenges the viewer. Describe the steps involved in creating your works. How do you develop your ideas through to resolved finished images?
Everything is matched to another material (for example images, sounds, words, numbers…) in my mind, so it makes things easier for me in the creating process of my works.

What concepts are you currently exploring and what will you embark on next?
I’m currently working on crystals and horns (for example: black crystal or trigonal crystal in my works).

I try to make crystal horned animal portraits :)
